Service Engineers at Yahoo! thrive on the scale and mission-critical nature of our complex ad serving runtime as well as the challenge that comes along with its operation. In this critical role, you\'ll utilize your rare combination of significant UNIX systems experience, network knowledge, troubleshooting skills and coding sensibilities to design, deploy, monitor, and automate all operational aspects of Yahoo!\'s revenue critical ad serving systems. The ideal candidate has solid experience supporting mission critical, LAMP based Internet Web Services, using open source technologies, such as Nagios and MRTG. In addition, this person should be proficient in Perl programming, have a background in large-scale system administration, and experience with 24x7 oncall support. S/he will work directly with product and development teams, satisfying both the service operations and service engineering responsibilities. Job Responsibilities: 1. Function as a technical generalist responsible for the overall health and performance of our many web applications 2. Develop tools to automate the deployment, administration, and monitoring of a large-scale Linux and FreeBSD environments 3. Gain deep application-level knowledge of the systems as well as contributing to their overall design 4. Work with development teams to harden, enhance, document, establish process and generally improve the operability of our systems 5. Assist in the configuration/build-out of new deployments to facilitate our constant growth 6. Participate in a 12x7 (daylight hours) on-call pager rotation Requirements: 1. Extensive system administration background 2. Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills, including application and network-level troubleshooting ability 3. Strong programming skills in Perl 4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills 5. Experience working with product and development teams Preferred Job Qualifications: 1. 5+ years experience with Linux (RHEL a plus) and FreeBSD 2. 5+ years experience administering large-scale UNIX installations (LAMP background a plus) 3. 2+ years experience working with Apache 4. 2+ years experience working with Nagios 5. 2+ years experience working with a package management system (yum and RPM a plus) 6. Experience with SQL and commonly deployed database systems 7. BS Computer Science |
