- Very good knowledge of Linux and Unix commands (must)
- Familiarity with regular expressions
- Being able to use Emacs / Vim / similar powerful Unix editor
- The ability to understand, edit, and write Perl and Java code
- Comfortable with creating UML diagrams
- An understanding of ssh, sftp, headless users
- Understanding client / server computing
- Should be able to create and store data in a mySQL database
- Creatively taking a lead in doing research / feasibility studies
- The ability to quickly knock up a Web Screen (e.g. using Php) is a bonus
- Understanding the Agile methodology
- Knowledge of test driven design and implementation
- Having written code in a commercial environment
- Being aware of the full development life cycle of a product
